I really don't get it.I was thinking about using this for our home schooling curriculum. I downloaded the Kindle version (free!) largely to look at, although my son loves reading on my Kindle so I could have saved myself buying a copy.
Anyway. There is something seriously wrong with the digital copy. It looks like somebody didn't scan the text properly because the heading is scattered throughout the text. Like this:
The cat
MCGUFFEY'S
looked at the mouse. The mouse
THIRD ECLECTIC READER
ran very fast.
(for example). It's unusable. It totally breaks up the flow of the text, and the reader would have to read around these extra words. I know my son is very particular and would probably insist on reading these extra words. Which totally destroys the point of doing oral reading exercises.
Does anybody know why it would do this, or if it could be fixed? I'm on to find a different copy... at the very least, this did afford me the chance to look at the books without going to the store. But we won't be able to use this digital copy.

they don't make school books like that anymore ---sadly.
Many lessons in one - reading, spelling. vocabulary, poetry, natural history. I especially like that the book contains many character lessons - perseverance, honesty, responsibility, gratitude, obedience , etc. I highly recommend it .
A great supplement to our homeschooling language arts program. We mostly use for reading aloud. So far I've been pleased with the Primer and this Third reader. I plan on purchasing the entire set.
But I can't. The text in this book is laid out so oddly. There are these seemingly random breaks in the text, like this on page 7
"6. Some of these boys found out that James
28 ECLECTIC SERIES, had money which his aunt had given him; and he was led by them to hire a boat, and to go with them upon the water"
What is with the ECLECTIC SERIES and/or THIRD SERIES that appears in BOLD at odd places within the texts of the lessons??? Am I missing something?
This is available in the public domain and you can get it in pdf format with images. In this kindle book, which I purchased today, there are no images; I was hoping it did have images that's why I took a chance. That's too bad. But if you just want text, it's fine. [...] has it available for free in the public domain and also as a pdf download with the images, also free. [...]
Two ladies clubs donated these McGuffey Readers, to be used in a historical school house. These are replacing the ones that have been in use since the school reopened in 1986. Children will be enjoying them for the next 25 years, during their visit to what school was like in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Yet another great purchase from . A sincere thank you to both and the ladies' clubs who donated them.
This is a fantastic educational resource for all parents. I highly recommend it. Great stories with great morals, as well as great lessons.
